Sponsor an air sensor

Help us grow the sensor network, club together with neighbours or local businesses to get a sensor for your street. By sponsoring a sensor, the air quality readings will be displayed on this website and will contribute to everyones understanding of the air in Frome.

What we need from you...

Sponsorship

To sponsor a sensor for your street, road or business costs £80 and is payable upfront, as we need to buy the materials and build the sensor.

The cost contributes to materials, development and running costs of the website and the sensor network. The team is made up entirly of volunteers drawn from Tech Shed Frome .

Hosting the sensor

  • The sensor needs to be outsite, ideally on a window sill.
  • It should be in an easy to access, if it needs repair, or maintenance.
  • It will need to be left undisturbed and without interference by anyone as this can affect the readings.
  • A member of the Tech Shed Frome team will fix it in place for you.

Coronavirus and safety
In order for us to install the air sensor, we will need a member of Tech Shed Frome to come to your premises. We can arrange with you ahead of the visit to ensure social distancing and other measures can be put in place to ensure a safe installation.

A WIFI connection

  • The sensor box will need to connect to your home Wifi network.
  • We will also need your WiFi password. This will only be used to install the device.
  • If you feel unsure about sharing this information, please contact the team for a full explanation and reassurance that your security will not be compromised.
  • This will only need to be configured once, and is done by the Tech Shed Frome Team.
  • It does mean that we need to ask that you leave your router on, and to not change your WiFi password without notifying us.
  • We won't have access to any other machines or devices on your WiFi network.
What about data privacy? Will my details be shared?
No personal details will be made public or shared with any other parties. The only information we may keep on file is your name, the sensor location and contact details. We aim to present the air quality information on a website, which will give a rough location of the sensor within 25 meters. It will not list your address or exact location.

Access to a power source

  • The device will need a nearby plug to power it, via a flat USB cable (that can fit under a closed window to a plug).
  • The cable is thin enough that many windows will close without disturbing the cable or the device.
  • If you have another type of window, we will assess the best cable for it. Double glazed units are unlikely to be suitable.
How much power does it use?
The sensor runs on 5 volts, the same as a mobile phone. It is powered by a mobile phone charger that needs to stay plugged into the mains. We estimate the usage to be about 4.161kWh power or about 60 pence per year, based on average UK electricity price.


You must have the following to be an air sensor

  • A stable wifi connection that is detectable near the window
  • Give access to my property to install the air sensor
  • A window that will host the air sensor and is within 3 meters of a plug
